In addition to reading NIGHTCAPS (I hope), my friends and family often text me with niche requests:
“My great uncle is visiting from Montana, and we want to eat ONLY dumpling-style foods. Nothing with seafood (it scares him) and ideally in lower Manhattan or Greenpoint. He’ll be wearing a real cowboy hat - so we need a place that’s casual or hipster (or both). Help!”
Something like that.
Big news - NIGHTCAPS is now taking reader requests! This idea was inspired by NYT Cooking - and they recently sent out a similar newsletter, though I swear I’ve been planning this one for months. Just ask my mom! She saw the draft!
Here’s how we’ll do it:
Make sure you’re subscribed (unbelievably still free).
Reply to any NIGHTCAPS newsletter email (in your inbox on Wednesdays) with your NYC dining or drinking inquiry. The more specific, the better!
Reader questions - with my answers - will be featured in upcoming newsletters.
Hooray!
And in case you were wondering:
The steamed pork and chive dumplings from Shu Jiao Fu Zhou (Chinatown) or the sauerkraut and mushroom pierogi from Pierozek (Greenpoint) will certainly do the trick.
I also love Super Taste’s (Lower East Side) steamed and/or fried dumplings - the hipster Dimes Square crowd will applaud your great uncle’s hat without irony.
Otherwise, take a family photo jointly holding a pineapple roast pork bun from Mei Lai Wah (Chinatown), and rejoice.
We did it!

Can’t wait to read your questions and deliver spot-on recommendations!
xoxo NIGHTCAPS
Staying at The Ace hotel in a few months (on Broadway I think!), where is a good place to have a solo breakfast? And can we have dinner!?
Genius idea! I'd love the best gluten-free dinner options anywhere between Tribeca and Chelsea! Whaddya got?
